Jun 9    MCHS Speakers Series: Eastern European Immigrants of Madison County
    Learn about village costumes from the late 1800's and early 1900's in Macedonian, Croatian and Roma cultures at this presentation by Marin Moehle. The grandson of Macedonian immigrants, Moehle learned native language, traditions, folklore and village culture from his family. His interest in ethnography lead him to collect traditional folk clothing and other items immigrants brought with them to the New York.
   As the owner of one of the largest private collections of folk clothing in the United States and Canada, the colorful program will feature typical work clothes, festival costumes and mourning clothes. You are invited to arrive early to ask questions about the costumes as Moehle sets up a display representing a portion of his collection.
             This program is a free event that is open to the public.

Jun 30    MCHS Speakers Series: New Philadelphia and the Story of Free Frank
    MCHS welcomes authors Gerald A. McWorter, who wrote a new book on the town of New Philadelphia, Illinois. Located in Pike County, about 20 miles east of Hannibal, Missouri, it is the first known town in the U.S. founded and platted by an African American. In 1836, former slave Frank McWorter platted the community after purchasing his freedom. Over a period of years he did the same for 16 family members. 
    The community's proximity to a then slave-holding state (20 miles) made it a regular stop on the Underground Railroad. Frank McWorter's story is fascinating and inspiring. Although little remains of the town today, the site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
    The authors will have copies of their books available for sale and are willing to sign.
    This program is a free event that is open to the public.
