MCHS Speakers Series: New Philadelphia and the Story of Free Frank

Date: June 30, 2019 Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Event Description     MCHS welcomes authors Gerald A. McWorter, who wrote a new book on the town of New Philadelphia, Illinois. Located in Pike County, about 20 miles east of Hannibal, Missouri, it is the first known town in the U.S. founded and platted by an African American. In 1836, former slave Frank McWorter platted the community after purchasing his freedom. Over a period of years he did the same for 16 family members.
The community's proximity to a then slave-holding state (20 miles) made it a regular stop on the Underground Railroad. Frank McWorter's story is fascinating and inspiring. Although little remains of the town today, the site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The authors will have copies of their books available for sale and are willing to sign.
This program is a free event that is open to the public.
